Forest Pansy Redbud

a.k.a. "The Jack Daniels Redbud"
During one of my plant identification classes at Auburn, we "took-up" the Forest Pansy redbud. The professor began with all the ornamental characteristics of the tree and went on to say that this particular species was discovered by Mr. Hiram Stubblefield, founder of Forest Nursery Company in McMinnville, Tennessee. I was fascinated by this as I used to work at Forest Nursery in high school and this revelation came as a complete surprise to me. I phoned home that night to confirm the information. My father laughed and told me that I should have informed the professor that he was incorrect.
Charlie Keel was a foreman at Forest Nursery and was the first to notice the Forest Pansy redbud in a seed block. When I worked at Forest in the summer of 1986, Mr. Stubblefield had passed away, the nursery had rapidly gone downhill, but Charlie was still in the sales yard. He was constantly recalling the good times and wishing he was my age again. He also kept a bottle of Jack Daniel’s in the barn right behind the office. Pretending to enjoy the whiskey was tough but despite my initial gasping, I can now look back and honestly say that I’ve had a drink with the man who discovered the Forest Pansy redbud. You can also expect to see a Forest Pansy redbud in most any design plan I might have for your lawn!
